This Monday Meg and I were New Haven-bound. We laid out a rigorous itinerary of two pizza joints, burgers and ice cream; plotted and printed maps, checked train schedules, and roped in a third heifer, my good buddy Sledge who lives in New Haven. Just to be sure that an 11am arrival wouldn’t be too early, I checked the schedules of the establishments on our itinerary, and…aside from one, they were all closed on Mondays. So it was that we ended up heading toward the safety of Philadelphia, home of multiple 24/7 cheese steak places. (more…)

A trip to the Jerz

Our list of possible next food outings grew with every conversation. Meanwhile, my Facebook posting of photos from our Connecticut hot dog excursion gave rise to a flurry of comments from folks I haven’t seen since grammar or high school eager to talk about hot dogs in my home state of New Jersey. Amanda and my excited exchanges about fond remembrances of hot dogs past were being duplicated elsewhere, and so we used my classmates recommendations as fuel for a second road trip to the Garden State.

Super Duper Weenie!

With a new ZipCar membership and a will to turn my one day off into a mini getaway (rather than a day of errands and catch-up), I headed to roadfood.com in search of good lunch destinations within a few hours drive of the city.  I’d had a recent craving for hot dogs, perhaps owing to several exchanges with Meg on the subject, including a video on the making of hotdogs, which we both recognized would turn most stomachs but had had the effect of making both of ours ache with longing, so I ran a search for “hot dog”.  A preponderance of their hot dog recommendations were conveniently located in Connecticut, within the desired driving radius.  When I came upon the seductively named Super Duper Weenie, I knew where I would be having lunch on Monday.
